Cut Fold Shape explores methods for resurfacing, reshaping and restructuring cloth that are underpinned by accuracy in mathematical applications and an understanding of fabric properties for manipulation. The art of fabric manipulation changes the look and feel of a piece of cloth. It can embellish, inflate, support and create texture and in the process completely change its disposition. The end result is transformation.
The artists represented in this show are fashion designers, Sydney contemporary art makers and tertiary design students:
Yasmina Black, Sue Pedley, Kate Scardifield, Donna Sgro, The Vintage Clothing Shop Dresses By Dior and Vionnet and University of Technology Sydney students: Lily Durland, Tess Frost and Ziman Zheng
Kate Scardifield incorporates textiles, performance and video in her works.
Donna Sgro is a fashion and textile artist, designer and academic at University of Technology Sydney. Her free form fashion designs develop all aspects of cutting, folding and shaping and pursue her ideas about metamorphosis.
Yasmina Black brings an intuitive folding and shaping to the sculptural form of her hats. Inspired by such elements as origami or the flight of birds and insects her imaginative designs capture the essence of her ideas.
Sue Pedley is inspired by the shape of found clothing and Japanese blinds. She explores techniques such as frottage and cyanotypes.
After hours meet the artists event on Tuesday 2 May from 4.30 – 7.30
The exhibition includes a hands on CUT FOLD SHAPE creator space.
